Renal dysfunction is a common complication of MM and is associated with poor prognosis, particularly when progressive. Early identification of renal dysfunction is essential for prompt treatment for disease control and restoration of renal function. Urinary insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 7 (IGFBP-7), urinary tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase 2 (TIMP-2), and serum transgelin levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays and evaluated as biomarkers for the prediction of renal impairment in patients with multiple myeloma. U IGFBP-7/creatinine ratio, U TIMP2/creatinine ratio, and serum transgelin levels were higher in patients with MM than healthy controls, and predicted renal insufficiency in MM. Serum transgelin, urinary IGFBp7, and TIMP2 levels may have utility as biomarkers of renal tubular injury and predict future renal impairment in patients with MM.

BACKGROUND: Quality healthcare delivery is contingent upon effective teamwork and a patient safety-focused culture. TeamSTEPPS offers an evidence-based framework that enhances these competencies. However, the impact of TeamSTEPPS on newly graduated nurses, who undergo a significant transitional phase, has yet to be comprehensively explored. Consequently, the objective of this study was to assess the influence of TeamSTEPPS on perceptions of teamwork and patient safety culture among newly graduated nurses. METHODS: This study employed a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design with a single group, utilizing a convenience sample of 132 newly recruited nurses from a university hospital. The participants completed the hospital survey on patient safety culture and the TeamSTEPPS teamwork perceptions questionnaire at three different time points. RESULTS: The impact of the TeamSTEPPS training program was found to be significant, as indicated by the substantial improvement in the mean scores of nurses' perceptions regarding teamwork and the culture of patient safety across multiple assessments (p < 0.001). The effect size (η2p ≥ 0.14) suggests a large effect, further emphasizing the meaningful impact of the program on the measured outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: The study underscores the effectiveness of TeamSTEPPS as a valuable framework for facilitating the seamless transition of newly graduated nurses into the healthcare field. Integrating TeamSTEPPS into nursing training programs can significantly enhance nurses' perceptions of teamwork and the culture of patient safety. Therefore, it is crucial for nurse managers to implement TeamSTEPPS systematically, aiming to improve teamwork perception and cultivate a patient safety culture among nurses. Furthermore, they should establish mechanisms to ensure the consistent application of these skills over time.

The American Diabetes Association guidelines (2021) confirmed the importance of raising public awareness of diabetes-induced cognitive impairment, highlighting the links between poor glycemic control and cognitive impairment. The characteristic brain lesions of cognitive dysfunction are neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) and senile plaques formed of amyloid-ß deposition, glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (GSK3ß), and highly homologous kinase tau tubulin kinase 1 (TTBK1) can phosphorylate Tau proteins at different sites, overexpression of these enzymes produces extensive phosphorylation of Tau proteins making them insoluble and enhance NFT formation, which impairs cognitive functions. The current study aimed to investigate the potential contribution of liraglutide and pramlintide in the prevention of diabetes-induced cognitive dysfunction and their effect on the PI3K/AKT/GSK-3ß/TTBK1 pathway in type 2 diabetic (T2D) rat model. T2D was induced by administration of a high-fat diet for 10 weeks, then injection of a single dose of streptozotocin (STZ); treatment was started with either pramlintide (200 µg/kg/day sc) or liraglutide (0.6 mg/kg/day sc) for 6 weeks in addition to the HFD. At the end of the study, cognitive functions were assessed by novel object recognition and T-maze tests. Then, rats were sacrificed for biochemical and histological assessment of the hippocampal tissue. Both pramlintide and liraglutide treatment revealed equally adequate control of diabetes, prevented the decline in memory function, and increased PI3K/AKT expression while decreasing GSK-3ß/TTBK1 expression; however, liraglutide significantly decreased the number of Tau positive cells better than pramlintide did. This study confirmed that pramlintide and liraglutide are promising antidiabetic medications that could prevent associated cognitive disorders in different mechanisms.

Bisphenol A (BPA), a carbon-based synthetic polymer compound, was newly classified as an environmental toxicant and an endocrine-disrupting chemical leading to abnormalities in cell proliferation, apoptosis, or migration that contributes to cancer development and progression. This study aims to evaluate the effect of the elevation of γ- radiation dose and BPA on the liver and ovaries of female rats. In this study, eighty female albino rats (130-150 g) were used in this work. Rats in this experiment received BPA in ethanol (50 mg/kg b. wt.) for 30 days, day after day, and in the irradiated groups, animals were administered BPA and then exposed to γ- radiation in doses (2, 4, and 6 Gy) one shot dose. Several members of the cytochrome family were examined. Exposure to γ-radiation and BPA showed an increase in cytochrome P450 and b5 fold change. Further, BPA and γ-radiation activate α and ß estrogen receptors and also downregulate aromatase (CYT19) fold change. The current results also revealed that BPA and/or γ-radiation regulate the protein expression of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. The steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR) appeared to be targeted by BPA and γ-radiation and its relative expression was elevated significantly by raising the γ-radiation dose. In conclusion, exposure to BPA, an endocrine-disrupting chemical, leads to marked toxicity. Additionally, toxicity is heightened by increasing the γ-radiation dose, either alone or in combination with BPA.

BACKGROUND: Despite the marked increase in the anatomical success rates of macula-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) surgery, patients may still complain about unsatisfactory visual outcome. This study aims to correlate the postoperative corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) with the mf-ERG (multifocal electroretinogram) and OCT (optical coherence tomography) findings following vitrectomy surgery for RRD. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective observational study included 40 eyes of 40 patients who underwent successful vitrectomy surgery for macula-off RRD. CDVA, mf-ERG amplitudes, mf-ERG latencies, the central macular thickness (CMT) and the integrity of the inner segment/outer segment (IS/OS) junction assessed by OCT, were evaluated 6 months postoperatively. The correlations between CDVA with mf-ERG amplitudes, mf-ERG latencies, central macular thickness, and IS/OS junction integrity were analyzed. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant moderate positive correlation between CDVA of the studied eyes with mf-ERG amplitudes of N1, P1 and N2 in ring 1 (P = 0.008; P < 0.001 and P = 0.004, respectively), CMT (P < 0.001), and the integrity of IS/OS junction (P < 0.001). There was no significant correlation between CDVA and mf-ERG latencies in ring 1 (P > 0.05). Linear regression analysis revealed that CDVA was significantly associated with mf-ERG amplitudes and the IS/OS junction integrity. In addition, there was a strong positive correlation between mf-ERG amplitudes in ring 1 and the IS/OS junction integrity. CONCLUSIONS: The integrated interpretation of postoperative CDVA, multifocal ERG parameters, and OCT findings provides useful information about functional visual recovery and retinal microstructural changes following vitrectomy for macula-off RRD surgery. The positive correlation between the IS/OS junction integrity and the mf-ERG amplitudes was stronger than the correlation between the IS/OS junction integrity and CDVA suggesting that mf-ERG may be superior to CDVA in reflecting the extent of microstructural damage in the photoreceptor layer. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on women's health, particularly on their menstrual cycles. The menstrual cycle serves as a crucial indicator of fertility and reproduction. Objectives: This study aimed to examine the impact of COVID-19 infection and vaccination on menstrual regularity in Saudi women of childbearing age. Additionally, it sought to explore the potential effects of COVID-19 vaccination on serum hormonal levels during the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle, along with their relationship with Vit.D. Methods: This case‒control study investigated the impact of COVID-19 infection and vaccination on menstrual regularity and hormonal function in Saudi women of reproductive age. Data were collected from 79 women who attended the Outpatient Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at King Faisal Medical Complex in Taif, Saudi Arabia. All participants had received COVID-19 vaccines. The data collection process was comprehensive, encompassing various participant characteristics, such as demographic information, history of COVID-19 infection, and details about menstrual patterns before and after infection and vaccination. Furthermore, hormonal measurements, including follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), oestradiol, prolactin, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and vitamin D (Vit.D) levels, were extracted from the participants' medical records. Results: Among the participants, 39.24 % had a history of COVID-19 infection, and following the infection, there was a significant increase in the proportion of women experiencing irregular menstruation. After receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, 72.15 % of the participants continued to have irregular menstrual cycles. The study found that a considerable number of participants had menstrual cycles outside the normal range, with 43.80 % having cycles shorter than 21 days and 35.10 % having cycles longer than 35 days. Comparing participants with regular and irregular cycles after COVID-19 vaccination, no significant changes were observed in most hormonal levels. However, the prolactin hormone showed a significant increase in participants with irregular cycles, while Vit.D levels were significantly decreased in this group. Conclusion: The study findings indicate a higher prevalence of irregular menstruation among participants, particularly after vaccination. Notably, irregular menstrual cycles were found to be associated with elevated levels of prolactin hormone and decreased levels of Vit.D.

Background: One of the major issues affecting global health is Diabetes mellitus (DM), not only in terms of the disease itself but also its complications. Macrovascular complications are both common and serious, affecting many patients. This study aimed to assess fasting C-peptide levels and correlate them with the severity of the peripheral arterial disease complicating type 2 DM (T2DM). Patients and Methods: This study included 200 participants who were categorized into two groups: Group I (n=100, patients with T2DM complicated by femoropopliteal arterial atherosclerosis) and Group II (n=100, healthy age- and sex-matched individuals serving as controls). Fasting C-peptide levels were estimated using an immunochemiluminometric assay. Results: Fasting C-peptide levels were significantly higher in Group I than in the control group. Fasting C-peptide levels were positively correlated with the severity of atherosclerosis. In addition, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis revealed that fasting C-peptide levels served as a specific and sensitive marker for detecting the severity of this disease. Conclusion: Fasting C-peptide levels can be used as a sensitive and specific indicator of the severity of femoropopliteal arteriosclerosis that complicates T2DM.

INTRODUCTION: Epicardial adipose tissue may have an important role in the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease (CAD). AIM: We aimed to study the association between epicardial fat volume (EFV) and presence of obstructive as well as multivessel CAD. METHODS: A total of 87 adult subjects with suspected CAD who underwent both quantified by multidetector computerized tomography (MDCT) and Invasive Coronary Angiography (ICA) were enrolled in this observational study. EVF was measured by MDCT by calculating the sum of cross- sectional areas of fat multiplied by slice thickness. EFV measurement and its association with the presence of obstructive CAD (defined as coronary artery stenosis > 70%) was evaluated. RESULTS: Overall, 89.6% patients had obstructive CAD with higher EFV as compared to 10.3% patients with non-obstructive CAD (57 ± 20.14 cm3 vs. 44 ± 7.4 cm3; P < 0.001). Furthermore, EFV was significantly increased in group II as compared with group I (74 ± 24.3 ml vs. 53 ± 16.2 ml; P < 0.003). On the hand, the coronary calcium score (CAC) was insignificantly increased in group II as compared with group I (486.1 vs. 211.2; P = 0.10). Multivariate analysis revealed that, EFV might be an independent risk factor for not only the presence of obstructive CAD (odds ratio [OR], 1.062; 95% CI 1.018- 1.108; P < 0.005) but also in predicting multivessel disease affection. CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrated that, EFV was significantly increased not only with obstructive CAD, independent of other traditional risk factors and CAC score, but also it can be considered a good predictor of multivessel disease occurrence.

Transposon elements (TEs) are mobile genetic elements that can insert themselves into new locations and modify the plant genome. In recent years, they have been used as molecular markers in plant breeding programs. TE-based molecular markers (TE-markers) are divided into two categories depending on the transcription mechanism of the TEs. The first category is retrotransposon-based molecular markers, which include RBIP, IRAP, REMAP, and iPBS. The second group is DNA-based-TE-markers, which include MITE, TE-junction, and CACTA TE-markers. These markers are a good tool for studying genetic diversity and can provide information on plants' phylogenetic and evolutionary history. They can help improve breeding programs to increase agronomic traits and develop new varieties. Overall, TE-markers play an important role in plant genetics and plant breeding and contribute to a better understanding of plant biology. Here, we present TEMM, a curated data resource for TE-markers in plants. Relevant research articles were screened to collect primer sequences and related information. Only articles containing primer sequences are added to the present data resource. TEMM contains 784 primers with their associated PCR reaction programs and their applications in various crops. These include 203 IPBS, 191 RBIP, 140 IRAP, 78 TE-junction, 76 IRAPS, 47 RBIP-IRAP, 16 IRAP-REMAP, 12 REMAP, 12 REMA-IRAP, 6 REMA, and 3 ISBP primers. Sarcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous disease of unknown origin. Ninety percent of patients with sarcoidosis have lung involvement. The onset can be acute or non-acute and the severity of sarcoidosis ranges widely from asymptomatic patients with accidental radiographic findings to patients with severe organ involvement. This case control analytic prospective study was conducted at the Chest Clinic, Al Zahraa hospital, to assess the diagnostic value of serum soluble interleukin 2 receptor (sIL-2R), cluster of differentiation 4 (CD4)/CD8 ratio and CD103 in sarcoidosis. We investigated the value of serum sIL-2R using ELISA and blood CD103, blood CD4/CD8 ratio using flow cytometry for 30 cases of sarcoidosis in different stages and 30 control persons to detect their use as a marker for diagnosis. We found a significant increase in sIL-2R in the sarcoidosis group as compared to the control group (p˂0.0001), while there was a significant decrease in CD103/CD4 in sarcoidosis group as compared to the control group (p < 0.001). In conclusion, sIL-2R and CD103 can be used as diagnostic markers for sarcoidosis.

Objectives: To investigate the relation involving soluble interleukin-2 receptor, interleukin-6 and interleukin-10 in hospitalised patients with severe coronavirus disease-2019 infection. Method: This single-centre cohort study was conducted at the Kafrelshiekh University Hospital, Egypt, from January to June 2022, and included all patients of either gender who were hospitalised with severe infection with the coronavirus disease-2019 isolation ward. Chemiluminescence immunoassay method was used to measure levels of procalcitonin, ferritin, soluble interleukin-2 receptor, interleukin-6 and interleukin-10. Data was analysed using SPSS version. 25. RESULTS: Of the 250 patients with median age 57.5 years (interquartile range: 45.8-66.0 years), 147(59%) were males and 103(41%) were females. Of them, 102(40.8%) patients died; 68(66.7%) males, 34(33.3%) females, median age 60.0 years (interquartile range: 48.8-70.0). Among the 148(59.2%) survivors, 79(53.4%) were males and 69(46.6%) were females, while the overall median age was 55.0 years (interquartile range: 41.5-65.8 years). The survivors had significantly lower levels of soluble interleukin-2 receptor, interleukin-6 and interleukin-10 (p<0.001). Correlation analysisidentified significant positive correlation between IL-2R, IL-6 and IL-10 levels and almost all the inflammatory and coagulation parameters, including C-reactive protein, lactate dehydrogenase, procalcitonin, ferritin, D-dimer and fibrinogen (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Elevated levels of soluble interleukin-2 receptor, interleukin-6 and interleukin-10 were found to be associated with greater risk of mortality in coronavirus disease-2019 patients.

Colon cancer is a major cause of cancer-related death, with significantly increasing rates of incidence worldwide. The current study was designed to evaluate the anti-carcinogenic effects of hesperetin (HES) alone and in combination with capecitabine (CAP) on 1,2 dimethylhydrazine (DMH)-induced colon carcinogenesis in Wistar rats. The rats were given DMH at 20 mg/kg body weight (b.w.)/week for 12 weeks and were orally treated with HES (25 mg/kg b.w.) and/or CAP (200 mg/kg b.w.) every other day for 8 weeks. The DMH-administered rats exhibited colon-mucosal hyperplastic polyps, the formation of new glandular units and cancerous epithelial cells. These histological changes were associated with the significant upregulation of colon Ki67 expression and the elevation of the tumor marker, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), in the sera. The treatment of the DMH-administered rats with HES and/or CAP prevented these histological cancerous changes concomitantly with the decrease in colon-Ki67 expression and serum-CEA levels. The results also indicated that the treatments with HES and/or CAP showed a significant reduction in the serum levels of lipid peroxides, an elevation in the serum levels of reduced glutathione, and the enhancement of the activities of colon-tissue superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase and glutathione-S-transferase. Additionally, the results showed an increase in the mRNA expressions of the anti-inflammatory cytokine, IL-4, as well as the proapoptotic protein, p53, in the colon tissues of the DMH-administered rats treated with HES and/or CAP. The TGF-ß1 decreased significantly in the DMH-administered rats and this effect was counteracted by the treatments with HES and/or CAP. Based on these findings, it can be suggested that both HES and CAP, singly or in combination, have the potential to exert chemopreventive effects against DMH-induced colon carcinogenesis via the suppression of oxidative stress, the stimulation of the antioxidant defense system, the attenuation of inflammatory effects, the reduction in cell proliferation and the enhancement of apoptosis.

BACKGROUND: Oral insulin administration has recently become one of the most exciting research subjects. Different approaches have been carried out to get an effective oral insulin delivery system using nanotechnology. The development of a delivery system that overcomes the difficulties of oral insulin administration, achieving high stability and minimal side effects, is still an urgent need. Therefore, this study is considered one of the efforts to design a new prospective drug delivery nano-composite (silica-coated chitosan-dextran sulfate nanoparticles). METHODS: Chitosan-dextran sulfate nanoparticles (CS-DS NPs) were prepared via a complex coacervation method and then coated with silica. Uncoated and silica-coated CS-DS NPs were physically characterized via different techniques. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, and atomic force microscopy (AFM) have been used to investigate the chemical elements, size, morphology, and surface properties of the prepared formulations. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to assess the thermal properties of formed nano-formulations. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy investigated the silica coat and chitosan interaction. The encapsulation efficiency was evaluated using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. The insulin release profile of nano-formulations was performed with and without silica coat at two different pHs (5.5,7), nearly simulating the environment of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). RESULTS: The silica-coated CS-DS NPs revealed interesting physicochemical properties exemplified by suitable core particle size obtained by TEM images (145.31 ± 33.15 nm), hydrodynamic diameter (210 ± 21 nm), high stability indicated by their zeta potential value (-32 ± 3.2 mV), and adequate surface roughness assessed by AFM. The encapsulation efficiency of insulin-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (ICN) was (66.5%) higher than that of insulin-chitosan complex nanoparticles (ICCN). The silica-coated ICN demonstrated a controlled insulin release profile at pHs (5.5 and 7) compared with uncoated ICN. CONCLUSION: The silica-coated ICN can be an efficient candidate as a desired oral delivery system, overcoming the common obstacles of peptides and proteins delivery and achieving high stability and controlled release for further applications.

Background: Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play an important role in activation of innate and adaptive immune responses. Aim: We aimed to detect the association between TLR2 rs5743708 G>A and TLR9 rs5743836 C>T variants and COVID-19 disease susceptibility, severity, and thrombosis by using neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). Subjects and Methods: We included 100 adult COVID-19 patients as well as 100 age- and gender-matched normal controls. Participants were genotyped for TLR2 rs5743708 and TLR9 rs5743836. Citrullinated Histone (H3) was detected as an indicator of NETs. Results: The mutant (G/A and C/C) genotypes and (A and C) alleles of TLR2 rs5743708 and TLR9 rs5743836, respectively, have been significantly related to a higher risk of COVID-19 infection, representing a significant risk factor for the severity of COVID-19. There was no significant association between the two variants and citrullinated histone (H3). Conclusion: TLR2 rs5743708 and TLR9 rs5743836 variants have been significantly related to a higher risk and severity of COVID-19 infection but had no effect on thrombus formation.

Chatbots can provide valuable support to patients in assessing and guiding management of various health problems particularly when human resources are scarce. Chatbots can be affordable and efficient on-demand virtual assistants for mental health conditions, including anxiety and depression. We review features of chatbots available for anxiety or depression. Six bibliographic databases were searched including backward and forwards reference list checking. The initial search returned 1302 citations. Post-filtering, 42 studies remained forming the final dataset for this scoping review. Most of the studies were from conference proceedings (62%, 26/42), followed by journal articles (26%, 11/42), reports (7%, 3/42), or book chapters (5%, 2/42). About half of the reviewed chatbots had functionality targeting both anxiety and depression (60%, 25/42), whereas 38% (16/42) targeted only depression, 38% (16/42) anxiety and the remaining addressed other mental health issues along with anxiety and depression. Avatars or fictional characters were rarely used in these studies only 26% (11/42) despite their increasing popularity. Mental health chatbots could benefit in helping patients with anxiety and depression and provide valuable support to mental healthcare workers, particularly when resources are scarce. Real-time personal virtual assistance fills in this gap. Their role in mental health care is expected to increase.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most fatal cancers around the world and remain asymptomatic in early stage. An alcoholic extract prepared from leaves of Tropaeolum majus L. (Tropaeolaceae) was assessed for its potential activity against diethylnitrosamine-induced liver carcinoma in vivo. Oral administration of the extract significantly decreased the inflammatory marker translation NF-kB and supressed HCC progression in combination with 0.5 Gy gamma radiation via EGF-HER-2 pathway. Histopathological and immunohistopathological features also showed the recovery of a hepatic architecture. Immunohistochemical study showed the T. majus and LDR enhancement effect on proapoptotic markers (caspase-3 and Bax) and inhibition of anti-apoptotic factor (BCl2). HPLC-DAD-MSn analysis of the extract revealed the annotation of twelve compounds. T. majus could mediate a defensive influence against diethylnitrosamine-induced hepatocarcinogenesis and serve as a respectable option in amelioration of the hepatocellular carcinoma development in combination with low dose of gamma radiation.

BACKGROUND: In patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity, there is often a vitamin D deficiency, which is crucial for many physiological processes. The enzyme 25-D hydroxylase activates vitamin D, and its status has been linked to glucose and lipid metabolism in these patients. This study investigates the correlation between the levels of 25-D hydroxylase and 25-hydroxyvitamin D, and their impact on glucose and lipid metabolism in Saudi patients with T2DM and obesity. METHODS: This study involved 150 Saudi participants (ages 35-70) of both genders from King Faisal Medical Complex in Taif. The participants were divided into control, type 2 diabetic, and obese diabetic patient groups, with 50 subjects in each group. Serum levels of 25(OH) vitamin D and 25-D hydroxylase were measured using ELISA. In contrast, an automatic analyzer for chemistry tests was used to measure fasting blood glucose (FBG), aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), and lipid profile levels. Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c)% was analyzed using the automatic glycosylated hemoglobin analyzer. In addition, the body mass index (BMI) value was calculated using the equation (BMI = weight in kilograms/height in meters squared). RESULTS: In obese with T2DM and T2DM patient groups, there were significant increases (p < 0.0001) in BMI, FBG, HbA1c%, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), AST, and ALT levels and significant decreases (p < 0.0001) in 25(OH) vitamin D, 25-D hydroxylase, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels compared to the control group. There were significant positive correlations between vitamin D with 25-D hydroxylase and HDL-C and negative correlations with HbA1c%, FBG, TC, TG, LDL-C, ALT, AST, and BMI in the studied patient groups. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that lower levels of the enzyme 25-D hydroxylase are linked to reduced vitamin D levels in people with T2DM and obese diabetic patients. Additionally, there was a notable correlation between vitamin D levels and BMI, lipid profile, FBG, HbA1c%, AST, and ALT levels.

Transposable elements (TEs) are indispensable components of eukaryotic genomes that play diverse roles in gene regulation, recombination, and environmental adaptation. Their ability to mobilize within the genome leads to gene expression and DNA structure changes. TEs serve as valuable markers for genetic and evolutionary studies and facilitate genetic mapping and phylogenetic analysis. They also provide insight into how organisms adapt to a changing environment by promoting gene rearrangements that lead to new gene combinations. These repetitive sequences significantly impact genome structure, function and evolution. This review takes a comprehensive look at TEs and their applications in biotechnology, particularly in the context of plant biology, where they are now considered "genomic gold" due to their extensive functionalities. The article addresses various aspects of TEs in plant development, including their structure, epigenetic regulation, evolutionary patterns, and their use in gene editing and plant molecular markers. The goal is to systematically understand TEs and shed light on their diverse roles in plant biology.

Background: Cigarette smoking is an important modifiable risk factor in kidney disease progression. Although long-term smoking has been associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD), its effect on kidney function in early stages has not been clarified. Objective: To detect the early effects of smoking either active or passive on kidney functions. Methodology: The current study was comparative cross sectional study conducted on 280 participants, 140 were non­smokers and 140 were smokers (70 passive smokers and 70 active smokers). The two groups were comparable in terms of all parameters. We investigated the possible effects of smoking on kidney functions using both serum kidney function tests especially; serum urea, serum creatinine, serum cotinine levels and detection of albumin in urine. Smoking history, full Laboratory investigations, Ventilatory function test including (FEV1/FVC, FEV1, FEF 25-75%, VC and FVC) were done. Results: Serum urea, serum creatinine, serum cotinine levels and urinary albumin were statistically significant higher in smokers group in comparison to nonsmokers, also the serum cotinine levels and urinary albumin were statistically significant in active smokers in comparison to passive smokers. There were positive correlations between the level of urinary albumin and pack/year (r = 0.9, p<0.05), smoking index (r = 0.9, p<0.05), smoking duration (r = 0.4, p<0.05), and serum cotinine (r = 0.6, p<0.050) with good statistical significance. The most significant predictive risk factors of microalbuminuria among smokers group in descending orders were active smoking, passive smoking, age and serum cotinine level. Conclusion: Both active and passive smoking, especially among heavy smokers, is a significant risk factor for microalbuminuria. This finding increase the importance of early cessation of smoking in order to minimize early renal affection among healthy smokers that may not be discovered by routine renal function tests.
